# Documentary: music that leaves room for the story
Documentary music has the hardest brief in the library: it must shape the mood of a scene while staying so far out of the way that the viewer never consciously hears it. Everything about the genre follows from that — sparse arrangements, slow development and melodies that suggest rather than state.
What defines the genre?
Sustained strings, piano, soft guitar, subtle percussion and atmospheric textures. Little harmonic movement, no strong hooks, and dynamics that stay within a narrow band so the mix does not fight the narration. Tracks are usually long, because documentary scenes are.
By subject matter
- Nature and wildlife: warm strings, open harmony, a sense of scale
- Investigation and true crime: low pulses, unresolved tension
- History and biography: restrained piano, period-appropriate colour
- Science and technology: clean electronic textures, forward motion
Licensing documentary music
These tracks fit documentary and reportage, corporate storytelling, museum and exhibition media, long-form YouTube, podcasts and educational content. Their length and even dynamics make them unusually easy to cut: almost any section can serve as a bed.
All documentary music at Ashfallmusic is royalty free and fully cleared — licensed once, worldwide, in perpetuity, with no fees to any collecting society. Cue sheets are available for every track for broadcasters who require them.
