# Chiptune: music from the sound chip

Chiptune is written for — or in the style of — the sound chips of early home computers and consoles. Square waves, triangle basses, noise channels for percussion: a handful of voices, strict limits, and composers who turned those limits into a musical language of their own.

What defines the genre?

Few simultaneous voices, fast arpeggios standing in for chords, and melodies that have to carry everything because there is no room for texture. That constraint produces music with unusually strong hooks — chiptune melodies stay in the head precisely because they are so exposed.

Originals and modern versions

The collection covers both: authentic compositions written for the original chips, and modern productions that use the same sound palette with contemporary mixing and arrangement. The second group sits more easily in a modern video mix, while the first carries genuine period authenticity.

Licensing chiptune

Chiptune belongs in indie games and game jams, retro gaming content, Twitch streams and YouTube channels, tech and developer videos, app and interface sound, and any production that plays with nostalgia. Short loops are especially useful for menus, level music and interface feedback.

Every chiptune track at Ashfallmusic is royalty free and cleared worldwide — one licence, no recurring society fees, usable in commercial game releases without further clearance.
